Vol 13 Issue 2 By Brigette Mercaldi With only one week of semester under your belt, you probably haven’t been thinking about taking a break just yet…but fear not! When that burning need to take a break from study does arise, I’ve got a few suggestions to inspire you to get moving and have a good time. No, no, no, I don’t mean the usual Netflix and Chill study break that you might usually have in mind. These ideas are far more exciting and energising…and did I mention free?
Now I do warn you, all of these suggestions do involve physical activity, but that’s exactly what you’ll need and crave after sitting at a desk all day! First up is Parkrun. It is a free 5km run held every Saturday at 8am in many locations all over the world. In Victoria there are over 60 locations including Parkville, so why not go for an easy jog to start the day before hitting the library? Oh, and don’t worry, Parkrun isn’t a race. You simply complete the course at your own pace. Many Parkrun locations also host post-run coffee at a local café, so it really is the perfect way to start off your weekend, no matter where you are in the world. All you have to do is register online at Parkrun Australia and print out your own barcode so your run is timed. My next suggestion is open water swimming. Now before you brush this idea away, give it a chance because it’s actually really awesome. There are a few swimming groups that meet up in the Port Phillip Bay area all year round. The Williamstown Mussels are a great group that meet every Saturday morning of the year, and also add in an extra session on Wednesday evenings during summer. This is a group where everyone swims at their own pace and enjoys being outdoors. To participate, I do recommend that you are confident in the water, but you don’t have to be particularly fast. Trust me, give this swim a go and you’ll feel quite far removed from the stresses of law school. Check out Open Water Swim Coaching on Facebook for details, and I’ll see you in the water! If Parkrun or open water swimming aren’t really your thing, why not try free fitness classes, such as those run by the Healthy Lifestyle Lounge? They meet at the Alexandra Gardens in the CBD and all you have to do to attend is RSVP to their Facebook page. Goodbye gym membership fees and hello free fitness classes! If none of these suggestions are for you, perhaps consider taking an art class, or joining a choir? The point is, study breaks don’t have to be boring and you can have a life during semester without breaking the bank. As long as you get out there and try something new and exciting, your week is bound to be far more interesting and fun. So don’t just lock yourself up in the library or at home - live your best life!
